While certain things can be considered a MUST, such as, web site getting e-commerce enabled, have free reports and information available to your customers, and sale of quality products, volumes can be written about each subject related to conducting business on-line. One of the main goals of Business People Weekly is to bring you information, on a weekly basis, that will assist you in starting, and growing your business on-line. BPW will also strive to bring you articles from other successful netpreneurs that will help you to succeed. All tips received will be archived on BizJuntion Web Site permanently. ************************************* Some of what does not work (if you are going to operate a reputable business on the Internet) is failing to adopt a strict "No Spam" policy. One of the fastest way that I can think of to damage your reputation for a long time to come is to send UCE, UBE, i.e. "Spam". For those who are wondering - UCE is Unsolicited Commercial E-mail, UBE is Unsolicited Bulk E-mail and both are spam. Spam, in a simple definition, is e-mail sent to persons who did not request to receive it. Most ISP's will terminate a client, very ungraciously, for spamming. Developing an opt in only email list is the only way to build and grow your business. You aren't going to accomplish this overnight. This is not a difficult task, but, it does take work and some time. In fact, if you think that all you need do is set up a web site and "they will come" then I think you'll be in for a long dry spell. There are various e-mail mailing lists that can be purchased but I would caution to be very careful. Many of the names on these so called "safe lists" have been harvested from ads, web sites, and other means without the address owner's permission. Using these lists could end up getting complaints of spam which could cause you serious problems with your ISP. I can't help but wonder if the rate of return on the purchased list is worth the possibility of the same or higher rate of complaints. All I'm suggesting here is to be careful and selective. You don't want to cause injury to your reputation or problems with your ISP. So, what works and how do you start an on-line business? The basics are: 1. Develop a plan. 2. Have a product to offer. Your product will help determine your target market. 3. If you don't have a product there are many affiliate programs with which you can become involved. 4. Build a web site with your own domain name. (Having your own Domain Name is very important) 5. Marketing - Use all the free sites you can find to post your ads, submit to the search engine, and post more ads. When you get done, start over. Like I said earlier, one could write volumes on the items mentioned above, so this just presents a simplified outline. Future articles will discuss various aspects of on-line marketing, web sites, etc. in more detail. *********************************** Viruses are still very much a problem. The best advice is to not open any unexpected attachments. The person from whom you received the attachment, in all probability, does not know it was sent. You should verify with the sender that the attachment was indeed sent by him/her and/or check it with an up to date anti-virus program. A good anti-virus program is a must for your PC. Chat rooms are usually broken into categories. Find the right chat room where your targeted audience would gather. Create a chat room profile with your ad, business info, or signature file in it.
