In case you have looked for last week's newsletter online, You
won't find it there. There's about a two week gap between when
the newsletter is published and when I post it on site. But, if
there is something you have a particular interest in and don't
have a copy, please drop me an note and I'll be more than happy
to send you a copy.

I really don't know where the time goes. It seems like yesterday
that I was working on last week's publication. This week I've
been trying to review, revise, and add to BizJunction. So far
I've only gotten the first two almost accomplished. You don't
have these problems, do you?

Have you reviewed your web site recently? Checked your links to
make sure they are current? Do you have meta tags installed on
each page? There's where I found I have fallen down. In some
haste to get some pages up, I just plain forgot about meta tags.
So, I found several that were not properly tagged.

I guess that part of the reason I didn't think about the tags is
because I haven't been promoting to the search engines as I
should be. I'm working on getting that corrected too. Hey, it
doesn't take hardly anytime at all for your site start getting
behind. I sure hope you're more diligent than I have been and
don't let this happen.

I will very soon be adding 3 new software programs you can
download for free. I think they may be helpful because, besides
using them, you can give them to your web site's visitors too.
Use them as another tool to get visitors to your web site. Don't
forget about the E-Books. I'll have that page up soon also.

If you have any tips or tricks that you would share with others,
please let me know. If I publish them you will get full credit
with e-mail and URL published as applicable. If there is
anything you would like to see included in Business People
Weekly, also let me know.

I am constantly looking throughout the Internet to find new and

        Creating your own Database

Database Marketing is probably one of the most important
activities that you will engage in on the Internet.

Rather than waiting for visitors to come to your Web site, you
can actually be proactive and determine communication cycles
yourself by bringing promotional opportunities to your customers
and prospects.

As we have seen on the Internet during the course of the last 18
months, there has been an explosion of "e-zine mania" and "opt-in
lists". Although the principle is sound, the delivery and
execution is often a complete nightmare.

Many of these mailings are in fact "spamming" activities working
in covert operations under the guise of an opt-in list which
no-one has heard of.

The big give-away is the content, which is usually only good for
our trusty delete button.

One of the most important aspects of managing your own database
is maintaining a high degree of quality and professionalism in
terms of the information you distribute. Don't send material for
the sake of it. It's a short term gain because recipients will
either unsubscribe, or delete every communication they receive
from you.

So what do you need to manage your own database?

First, you need a mailing list or database management program.

It will be extremely difficult to keep on top of any database -
regardless of size - using a non-automated system. We strongly
recommend that you incorporate some form of mailing list
management program.

This will be particularly vital when the number of subscribers
shoots skyward!

To kick off, you can use an email management program. However,
we would strongly suggest you go for a more robust option.

There are two different types of programmes you can use. The
first allows you to download scripts and manage your lists
yourself. This is really for the more computer-literate user
among you, and not for mere mortals such as ourselves.

If, like ourselves, you have neither the time or the inclination
to bother learning the technicalities of managing your own list,
then you will need a Mailing List Manager.

This is usually the most popular option for the professional
business user.

There are thousands of list servers on the Web. The main benefit
with them is that you mail your particular article to them, and
they will distribute it to your entire list.

(It is also possible to mail to a portion of your list, if you
wish)

Mailing list servers are generally the better option, simply
because of the time you will save. Most are free, and require an
advertisement for the service to appear on each message you post.

Some of you may be concerned that it is unprofessional to have
advertisements appearing on each message you post. There are a
number of other options:

One, is to locate a mail list server that provides a "no
advertisement" policy but charges a fee. Popular Programs
include:

http://www.dundee.net     

Dundee.net hosts many of the largest lists on the Internet. This
service is particularly useful for those of you whose
subscription base has rocketed beyond the capabilities of free
mailing list servers.

Whereas most of these servers claim to have large subscription
capacities, in reality most only hold up to around 1,000.

Dundee.net holds up to 1,000,000!

A basic list (without archives and a search function) costs $25
per month, plus a standard surcharge of $0.30 for every 1000
postings.

There is also an Archive facility package ($45 per month +
surcharge), and a Premium package with the above features, plus a
Newsgroup and search function. That costs $55 per month +
surcharge.

http://www.eurofreebies.com/maillist/   is a unique service since
it adds no advertising to your newsletters or messages, but it
still remains free. At the time of going to press, this is the
only free service that offers this.

http://www.topica.com  offers you added extras for setting up a
list with their advertisement on your messages, but you do have
the choice of omitting them.

So what's next?

Well, without subscribers, you are not going to continue very
far. Once the management program is in place, you need to find
some prospects that are eagerly waiting to receive your material.

There are a number of different ways you can build up a database.
These are as follows

Free Newsletter / e-zine
Free Report
Free sample
Download sample software
Competition
Feedback
Bulletin Board
Request for brochure or more information

Don't get sucked into trying to buy names and addresses.

On the surface it seems a great idea, but the reality is that
the quality and level of response will be pretty poor. In
addition, many of the addresses that are contained on bulk
mailing lists are from people who hadn't actually opted-in, so
there is a good possibility you will be accused of spamming.

As mentioned above, the most popular method of building an Opt-in
list is to create an e-zine or newsletter. However, in order to
maintain your opt-in list, there must be a strong emphasis on
quality.

Once you have produced your e-zine, it must be promoted - not
only on your Web site, but also using a number of e-zine
directories that will actively promote your title. These

Finally - what do you say, and how often?

As we have stated countless times, the emphasis must be on
quality and real offers rather than simply using this opportunity
as an excuse to email recipients. If you adopt the latter
approach, then as soon as you have attracted opt-ins, they will
opt back out.

It is far better to communicate less and maintain a high degree
of quality, rather than mailing them poor material constantly.

If you are short of material, many e-zine owners will be more
than happy for you to use their material as long as you include
their signature file at the end of the article.
